Description |
Under the direction of the human rights and community relations department director, the senior associate will have primary responsibility for the department's outreach and interaction with the Hispanic/Latino community within and outside of the AFT. The incumbent will provide support for departmental conferences and workshops, represent the department in internal and external meetings, participate in the AFT Hispanic Task Force and produce the monthly departmental newsletter.

Requirements |
Cultivate relations with the Hispanic/Latino community including initiating contact and maintaining relationships for the purpose of building coalitions to advance AFT's agenda.
Develop, conduct and coordinate conferences, workshops and activities on human and civil rights.
Plan and carry out proactive efforts to promote AFT priorities.
Represent AFT at meetings and in dealings with outside organizations, including but not limited to Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA), U.S. Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI), and National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE).
Coordinate with other AFT departments on joint projects, including the AFT Hispanic Task Force.
Produce the departmental monthly newsletter that highlights all departmental activity. Broaden the readership by actively promoting and updating the publication to address readers' interest.
Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, skills and abilities:
Proficiency in Spanish both verbal and written - is required.
Experience working with the Hispanic/Latino community, particularly in civil rights education and public policy issues as well as community-based coalitions.
Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills are necessary.
Ability to analyze human and civil rights issues and laws as they affect public sector unions, civil rights organizations, AFT-supported coalitions, the public education system and public service employment is essential.
Background and experience in public policy and/or educational policy formulation.
Familiarity with AFT issues and/or its affiliates is a plus.
Familiarity with unions and/or non-profit associations is preferred.
Some travel is required.
